2. | Reliability and Validity Study of Life Balance Inventory in Schizophrenia Sultan Akel, Esra Aki, Emre Mutlu, Hatice Abaoğlu doi: 10.14744/bauh.2025.43434 Pages 47 - 53 INTRODUCTION: Managing daily routines and life balance is difficult for people diagnosed with schizophrenia. It is important for professionals who wish to intervene to have assessment and intervention tools. This study examines the reliability and validity of the life balance inventory (LBI) for assessing life balance in individuals with schizophrenia. METHODS: A sample of 52 patients (aged 26–64) from a community mental health center participated. Construct validity was evaluated through factor analysis, and reliability was assessed through test–retest and internal consistency analyses. RESULTS: Significant correlations were found between LBI subscales and measures of psychopathology, with moderate correlations for the health subscale and strong correlations for the relationships, identity, and challenge/interest subscales. Internal consistency was satisfactory, with Cronbach’s alpha ranging from 0.695 to 0.842, and test–retest reliability was high (r=0.89). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: These findings support the LBI as a valid and reliable tool for occupational therapy interventions in schizophrenia. |
3. | Investigation of the Impact of Pre-operative Anxiety Levels on Post-operative Sleep Quality in Surgical Patients Evin Korkmaz, Dilay Hacıdursunoğlu Erbaş, Betül Ilbey Koç doi: 10.14744/bauh.2025.40085 Pages 54 - 58 INTRODUCTION: This study aims to investigate the impact of pre-operative anxiety levels on sleep quality in patients undergoing surgical procedures. METHODS: The study was conducted between July 01 and August 31, 2023, at an Istanbul training and research hospital. A total of 220 patients aged 18 years and older, who stayed in the hospital for at least 24 h post-surgery and did not use sleep medications, were included. Anxiety levels were assessed using the Amsterdam Pre-operative Anxiety and Information Scale, while sleep quality was evaluated using the Richards-Campbell Sleep Questionnaire. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS 25.0 software. RESULTS: Among the participants, 50.5% were female, 65.9% were married, 51.8% were employed, and the mean age was 45±10.5 years. The average pre-operative anxiety level was 30.1±17.8, and the average sleep quality score was 15.2±4.16. Correlation analysis demonstrated a strong negative correlation between anxiety and sleep quality (p=-0.875, p<0.001). Furthermore, employment status and age were found to significantly affect both anxiety levels and sleep quality. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Pre-operative anxiety has a negative impact on sleep quality in patients. Addressing anxiety may contribute to an expedited recovery process post-surgery. |
4. | Determination of the Effect of Kahoot Application in Blood Gas Analysis of Nursing Students Berrin Pazar, Hafize Savaş, Aslıhan Büyükkömürcü doi: 10.14744/bauh.2025.55265 Pages 59 - 67 INTRODUCTION: The aim of the study was to determine the effect of Kahoot application on arterial blood gas assessment of nursing students. METHODS: The study was conducted in a quasi-experimental design with a study and control group with the students of the Surgical Diseases Nursing lecture of a foundation university who took the subject of arterial blood gas assessment and acid-base imbalances. RESULTS: The average age of participants was 20.50±1.55 years. Of the students, 87.2% were female, and 12.8% were male. A significant difference was found between the study and control groups in achievement levels after the Kahoot application (t[76]=6.404; p=0.000 <0.05). The study group showed a significant improvement in achievement after using Kahoot compared to their pre-Kahoot performance (t=-6.133; p=0.000 <0.05; d=1.037; 95% confidence interval=-3.233/-1.624). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: The study found that students’ achievement improved significantly after using Kahoot. Their attitudes and motivation toward gamification were also positive. It is recommended to incorporate Kahoot into the nursing education curriculum to enhance student learning. |
5. | A Comparison of Health Literacy and Health Declaration Knowledge Levels of Check-up and Outpatients Deniz Meriç, Ilayda Öztürk Altuncevahir doi: 10.14744/bauh.2025.18209 Pages 68 - 74 INTRODUCTION: This study was conducted to compare the health literacy and health declaration knowledge levels of check-up and outpatient clinic patients attending the nutrition and diet outpatient clinic of a private hospital. METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive method was used in the study. Sixty people (30 check-up and 30 outpatient) were included. The Informed Consent Form, General Information Form, anthropometric measurements (height, weight, Body Mass Index (BMI)), Türkiye Health Literacy Scale (TSOY-32), and the Status Information Form about Health Declarations created by the researchers were used in this face-to-face interview method. The participant groups were defined based on the hypothesis that check-up patients may show greater willingness to seek health support, potentially affecting health literacy outcomes. RESULTS: Sixty people were included in the study. The age range was 18–65 years. The number of female participants was higher in both groups (n=18 and n=24, respectively). In terms of TSOY-32 scale scoring, the calculated mean total scale score in the study population (n=60) was 14.74 ± 7.65 (p=0.900). At the health declaration knowledge level, the calculated mean total scale score was 61.11 ± 11.26 (p=0.892). There was no significant difference between health literacy and health declaration knowledge scores and age (p>0.05), gender (p>0.05), marital status (p>0.05), education level (p>0.05), employment status (p>0.05), social security status (p>0.05), income status (p>0.05), and BMI level (p>0.05). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: The level of knowledge about health literacy and declarations was found to be insufficient, and it was concluded that the basic health education provided in Türkiye should be expanded and its quality improved. Health literacy has the potential to improve individuals’ ability to understand and use health information, supporting better prevention, treatment adherence, and health equity. Similarly, health declaration knowledge plays a key role in enabling accurate disease surveillance, guiding public health policies, and promoting safety within communities and workplaces. In addition to planning and publicizing training in an easily accessible way, more long-term and comprehensive studies should be conducted. |

6. | Effect of Ergonomic Factors on Musculoskeletal Disorders in Dentists Ilker Can Büyükkırlı, Mert Tokmak, Berkay Eren Pehlivanoğlu doi: 10.14744/bauh.2024.02886 Pages 75 - 82 The science of ergonomics, by identifying and regulating primary factors, particularly those related to musculoskeletal disorders, plays a pivotal role in their prevention. The profession of dentistry, by its nature, is one of the most susceptible to musculoskeletal disorders. Therefore, the science of ergonomics should be integrated into the dental profession for the prevention and treatment of these disorders. Studies indicate that musculoskeletal disorders are observed in dentists at a rate ranging from 64% to 93%. The primary risk factors contributing to the onset of these disorders include prolonged static postures, repetitive movements, workplace designs, poor positioning, mental stress, physical conditioning, age, and non-job-related factors. Potential disorders that may arise from these risk factors include lumbar and cervical disk herniation, carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome, and postural abnormalities. All these potential musculoskeletal disorders entail various negative consequences in terms of both workforce loss and the material and spiritual burdens of resulting ailments. The fundamental aim of ergonomics, encompassing all these aspects, is to prevent these problems, thereby bringing together the dental profession and the science of ergonomics on common ground. Furthermore, through these ergonomic adjustments, the prevention of musculoskeletal disorders will reduce the burden on both healthcare facilities and their employees. The objective of this study is to compile solutions for musculoskeletal disorders observed in dentists by aligning them with the science of ergonomics. Accordingly, subtopics such as auxiliary equipment, clinician practice chairs, clinician posture recommendations, and patient positioning have all been elucidated in this study. |
7. | Salvaged Death Havvane Kulaksızoğlu, Fatma Eti Aslan doi: 10.14744/bauh.2024.46330 Pages 83 - 88 Every year, millions of people around the world are affected by both natural and man-made disasters. Earthquakes are among the disasters that cause severe destruction and loss of life. Salvaged deaths occur as a result of crush syndrome and its associated complications. Immediate deaths that occur during an earthquake are unavoidable. However, the management of serious injuries and other issues in earthquake survivors is a matter of life and death. The primary causes of salvaged deaths include inappropriate interventions at the disaster site, limited resources, and delays in reaching earthquake victims. The post- earthquake crisis, including search and rescue operations, debris removal, and medical care for survivors pulled from the rubble, requires a systematic approach. To prevent salvaged death, effective interventions must be carried out both under the rubble and after survivors are rescued. The health professional firstly evaluates the area, makes the necessary evaluations with triage, provides medical assistance, and ensures referral to the appropriate health institution. Case management during earthquakes is a challenging process for health-care professionals. The main principles at this stage are to stop bleeding, ensure airway patency, prevent hypothermia, and initiate fluid resuscitation. Fluid resuscitation should begin immediately with an intravenous or intraosseous line before the crushed area is released. From this perspective, it is critical to begin medical treatment for earthquake victims as soon as possible, even while still trapped under the rubble. Therefore, it is essential to train and develop experienced health-care professionals who have received the necessary education. |
